Monday September 7th, 2015- Firefighting
We learned basic firefighting techniques and how teamwork is needed to fight a fire. We were taught what to do if a fire was to start, classes of a fire, what extinguishers to use for certain fires and how to use these extinguishers to put out the fire. We also did part 1 of our Firefighting practical. This entailed partnering with teammates, suiting up in our firefighting gear and crawling through a dark room full of smoke and obstacles in search of a dummy. My partner actually ran out of oxygen during our search.
Tuesday September 8th, 2015-First Aid
On this particular day, we learned ways in which to save someone who is, unconscious, isn’t breathing, is choking, or is bleeding to death. For our practical we were required to act as though an accident happened and demonstrate what we were suppose to do. I played as an unconscious victim but lost character because I started to smile.
Wednesday September 9th, 2015-Suvival
This is where we learned what to do incase there was an emergency that required us to abandon ship, either due to a fire, piracy, or grounding. We were taught how to quickly and safely abandon the vessel and how to survive if help was delayed. We were not able to complete the practical for this section.
Thursday September 10th, 2015-PSSR
In this section we learned how important it is to communicate while onboard the ship and the responsibilities we would have while aboard. We were also taught how important it was to respect others and not to discriminate or judge and especially not to engage in sexual harassment. There was no practical for this section.
Friday September 11th, 2015-Firefighting practical
On the final day ,we completed our 2nd practical as it relates to firefighting. We were required to team up, put on our firefighting gear and actually fight a fire! I nearly got burnt when fighting the fire with a CO2 extinguisher.
